Field horsetail tea

Healing effect:

In traditional phytotherapy plants with silicon compounds, such as lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis) and horsetail, were used in the treatment of tuberculosis. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was believed that silicon compounds help the immune system of the lungs and regenerate damaged lung tissue. Modern phytotherapy considers such use relatively outdated and unjustified, although there are a fair number of cases where horsetail and lungwort help with lung disease.

From a clinical point of view, field horsetail has a justified use by urinary problems, such as chronic and acute cystitis (bladder inflammation) and kidney stones. Today we also know that not only silicon compounds are responsible, but other therapeutic compounds, including chemical unusual acid such ekvisetolic acid. Interestingly, the plant contains very small amounts of the compound of nicotine, present in tobacco. However, this amount is too small to have any affect on the body.

Field horsetail is used in the so-called drainage therapy aiming to “strengthen” the kidneys. These treatments usually last for 2-3 weeks and during which a mild diuretic effect is present, ie. There is a reinforcement of creating urine. This does not lead to an increase of potassium or sodium secretion, so that it can be carried out even if a person is taking medication (such as some medicines for the heart). One should always be careful not to use any tea that act on the secretion of sodium or potassium while being on medication.

Field horsetail is, in modern Phytotherapy, often described as a demineralisation plant, restoring the elasticity and strength of the bones, hair and nails. Therefore, it is also used for osteoporosis and for problems with fragile and brittle nails and hair. Since osteoporosis is a very common disease today, it is almost unbelievable that this application of horsetail is virtually unknown to us. It is also strange that at a time when many women resort to very expensive cosmetic products to strengthen their hair and nails, completely forgetting that beauty comes from within, and that it is important to help the body tissue so that it strengthens its function.

Soak one-two teaspoons of field horsetail tea in 2 dcl boiling water, leave covered for 20 – 30 minutes and then strain the tea. Sweeten according to taste, but best drunk unsweetened. Drink 3 cups of tea per day
