YARROW, (Achillea millefolium L.)

Yarrow has an upright growth height of 80 cm with a light green or red-brown trunk-color and many leaflets. The whole plant has a pleasant smell. The many small leaves are either white-purple or red. The flowers are collected in inflorescence at the top of the shaft.
Grows in continental climates almost everywhere on the roads and fields as a wild plant. It blooms white flowers in June to August. The plant is harvested during flowering. Yarrow got its botanical name thanks to the Greek hero Achilles (Achillea), and it means that that gives strenght.
The plant is widely used in Europe. It grows singly or in large numbers on the meadows and pastures. During flowering, we collect the flowers with short stems and whole plant up to 30 cm in length. The high content of bitter substances and essential oils makes it one of the bitter medicines. It flowers throughout the year.


Yarrow is collected in June before blooming or at the beginning of flowering. The roots are collected from fall to spring.


The plant in bloom, contains 1% essential oil (drug requires at least 0.13%), flavonoids, vitamin K, bitter achilein matter, resins, stereo, tannins and other helpful materials.
The essential oil of yarrow is obtained by steam distillation and contains pinene, cineol, thujone, camphor, limonene, borneol.


Yarrow purifies the blood and strengthens the digestive organs. It is especially useful for the healing of the liver, spleen, pancreas, jaundice, blood to the head, catarrh of the intestines and stomach, then cramps, fever, palpitations, bone pain and back pain, irregular menstruation, blood and sealed blister, insomnia, various rashes and ulcers.
Yarrow usefully heals chapped hands, vulnerable nipples during breastfeeding, as well as in the treatment of rashes on the skin – psoriasis. In psoriasis, they can assist with the purification of the blood. Reduces the difficulties of gout and rheumatism. Has an advantageous effect in diabetes, especially in the initial phase.
